Distinguished as a steadfast and original worker on account of his numerous contributions to our knowledge of the laws of chemical substitution and of the relation of colour to structure. Of these, the following may be mentioned: - 'Chlorinated Phenylhydrazines' (1891); 'The Three Chlorobenzeneazosalicylic Acids' (1893); 'Bromination of Benzeneazophenol' (1900); 'Bromination of Oxyazo-compounds and its Bearing on their Constitution' (1901); 'Colour and Constitution of Azo-compounds' (1907); 'Condensation of Chloral with Resorcinol' (1896); 'Relation between the Constitution and Fluorescence of some Substances' (1900 - a number of papers on this subject have appeared since).
