CitationDirector, Department of Entomology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Distinguished as the leading English medical entomologist. By encouraging and developing ecological and physiological methods of approach he and his collaborators have notably influenced the progress of medical entomology. His studies include relationships of insects to temperature and humidity (Proc Roy Soc B, 1924, 1930 : Bull Ent Res, 1931-34); a joint memoir (with D J Lewis) on the ecology of the tseste fly (Phil Trans, 1934); also numerous papers on 'Pediculus, Rhodnius, Sarcoptes', etc adding materially to knowledge in relation to control methods. Other works include his book 'Animal life in deserts' (1923) and ecological stuidies in S Pacific and Palestine bearing on mosquito control.
