Title | Harland, Sydney Cross: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Plant breeder. He has published numerous papers and one book on the genetics of cotton and other plants. By hybridizing cotton species he has shown that genes in a new environment alter not only in somatic effect but in mutability, that development of homologous structures may be controlled either by homologous or non-homologous genes, and that certain current theories of dominance are invalid. Most of the work on cotton cytology was carried out under his direction. He has made highly original contributions both to the theory of evolution and to the practical problems of tropical agriculture. |
