| Title | Bagnold, Ralph Alger: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
| Citation | During exploration of the Libyan Desert he observed movement of blown sand and concluded that the grains move in a series of jumps at wind speeds too low to raise sandstorms. Between expeditions he set up a wind tunnel in London and by photographing and analysing paths of sand grains established an original and complete mechanics of the motion of blown sand. (Proc Roy Soc 1936, /37, /38. Geographical Journal 1937, book "Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes" 1941)
Other experimental work includes measurement of shock pressure on structures by breaking waves and work on beach formation (J Inst Civil Engineers 1939, 1940)
Besides cartographical work in Libyan Desert (1929-38) candidate developed navigational and other equipment for desert travel which he used when in command of the Long Range Desert Group in the Libyan Campaign 1940-41. |
