| Citation | Distinguished as an organic chemist, he worked first on the structure of alkaloids including morphine and then turned his attention to the aporphine group for which he devised new methods of synthesis. He then became interested in the chemistry of substances of physiological importance. These included the oxytocic principle of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland and the nucleoproteins. He has determined the constitution of certain purine nucleosides and has synthesised some of these substances. He has also been interested in the action of chemical substances on cells and has studied groups of spermicides. He has attacked difficult problems with marked success and has also carried out much general synthetic work. |
