Citation | Distinguished as an organic Chemist. He has developed the chemistry of flavones, isoflavones, and especially the polyhydroxybenzenes. Natural products synthesised, alone or with collaborators, include genistein, gossypetin, quercetagetin, methyl irigenol, apiole (dill and parsley), croweacin, methylprimetin, pedicellin and fumigatin. He has made important contributions to the theory of chelate compounds of the aromatic series and has studied the condensation products of polyhydric phenols with interesting results. HIs work is characterised by elegance of experimental technique. Joint author of the completely revised 'Sidgwick's Organic Chemistry of Nitrogen' (1937). |
