| Citation | Distinguished especially for his researches in astrophysics, to which he has contributed a number of fertile ideas. Introduced the idea of turbulence into discussions of the solar chromosphere. Initiated the investigation of model stellar atmospheres built entirely of hydrogen. Explained, in collaboration with Mitra, the behaviour of wave-length displacements between centre and limb of the sun as a consequence of variation of mean optical depth. Has made various contributions to cosmology, collaborating with Milne in the theory of expanding Newtonian universes. Has also contributed to a wide range of problems in pure mathematics and mathematical physics. |
