CitationLeader of a team which has made outstanding contributions to radio astronomy. Developed radio interferometer using ocean as a mirror for accurate location of emitting areas on the solar disc. Showed existence of high temperature (coronal) radio radiation from quiet sun. Measured thermal radiation from ionosphere. Developed (in 1935) for study of ionospheric winds a method since extensively applied in many countries. Made important war-time contributions to radar techniques, including first successful development of switch permitting use of one aerial for transmitting and receiving. His inspiring leadership has made Radiophysics Laboratory work-fanous as a leading centre of radio-astronomy.
