Title | Richards, Francis John: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Richards has made important contributions to the study of relations of nutrient deficiencies to physiological processes; in particular the effects of potassium status on nitrogen and carbohydrate metabolism as related to respiration and water economy. Using complex factorial experiments, the interactions of potassium with phosphorus, sodium, calcium and rubidium were elucidated and he has employed statistical methods with great skill and devised a method of diagrammatic representation of the interactions. He has greatly advanced the theoretical interpretation of phyllotaxy and devised a "phyllotaxis index" in terms of which diverse systems can be characterised and compared. List of published papers is appended. |
