Title | Stiles, Walter Stanley: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | 1939: D.Sc. (London) 1944: Carpenter Medallist 1946: O.B.E. Government Scientist, Senior Principal Scientific Officer working at the National Physical Laboratory. Distinguished for the authoritative accuracy of his work on human visibility and colour problems. With Crawford he discovered the Retinal Directional effect known by their names. He was the first to investigate the problem of colour vision by the method of increment thresholds - a method which may be interpreted more rigorously than any yet devised to derive the fundamental response curves of the human eye. In a field notorious for controversy, the results of Stiles are widely recognised. |
