Title | Lythgoe, Basil: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished as an organic chemist, his researches have dealt mainly with natural products and have been both analytical and synthetic in character. In collaboration with Todd, he was responsible for a large volume of work leading to the final structural elucidation and total synthesis of the natural ribonucleosides. Later, following some studies on aspects of carbohydrate chemistry, especially in relation to nucleoside problems, he has carried out a series of brilliant researches leading to the recognition of the toxic macrozamin as the glycoside of an aliphatic azoxy compound, and to the identification of the poisonous principles of the water hemlocks as nitrogen free acetylenic compounds. Lythgoe's work is characterised by a combination of theoretical insight and high experimental skill. A list of publications is attached. |
