Citation | With S.A.S Simpson, J.F.Tait applied a bioassay method, which they had developed, to the investigation of a commercial adrenal gland extract. At the suggestion of S.A.S Simpson, the extract was fractionated by paper chromatography and eventually it was shown that the biological activity, effective on mineral metabolism and in prolonging the life of adrenalectomised animals under conditions of low stress, was due mainly to a single highly potent compound which was particularly characterized. In 1952, with S.A.S Simpson and I.E. Bush, he showed that this compound was secreted by the adrenal gland of dog and monkey. Later work with S.A.S. Simpson and Professor T Reichstein, A Wettstein and their groups led to its isolation in crystalline form and the elucidation of its structure as 11 beta, 21-dihydroxy-3, 20-diketo-4-prognen18al. It was therefore named aldosterone. Recently, with P.J. Ayres, P. Gould and S.A.S. Simpson, he has demonstrated, by a direct method of incubating beef adrenal tissue, that aldosterone is produced by the zona glomerulosa, cortisol by the zona fasciculate and corticosterone by both zones. |
