| Citation | Distinguished for his early researches in the Cavendish Laboratory on the emission, scattering, absorption, and measurement of gamma-rays. The international unit of dose, the rad, is realised in practice by the application of the Bragg-Gray cavity relation which is named after him. At the Mount Vernon Hospital he was the first scientist in this country to study the biological effects of neutrons, and compared these with biological effects of alpha, gamma and X-rays. In a long series of papers, with collaborators at times, he presented observations on cell reproduction as affected by ionising radiations and has related these to underlying physical and chemical changes. This work has served as a basis for the interpretation of radiation damage to cells.
More recently he has contributed greatly to our understanding of the role of oxygen in radiobiology and radiotherapy.
