Title | Hill, Rodney: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 16 March 1961 |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the knowledge of the mechanics of continuous media, particularly of the plasticity of metals. Before Hill's work knowledge of this subject was confined to results of experiments with test specimens of special simple geometrical form or to theories of ideal plastic materials which, as Hill showed, were not self-consistent. Hill developed a general self-consistent theory of the deformation of idealised materials and showed that it applies to real metals. He has written the standard book on plasticity and has founded the Journal of Mechanics of Solids in which the analytical methods he developed have been used to solve many problems of interest to physicists and engineers. |
