Title | Pollock, Martin Rivers: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished as a microbiologist, especially for his work on induced enzyme formation. By the highly skilled application of the methods of biochemistry and immunology to the study of penicillinase formation in B. cereus (underlined) he has shown that the inducing substrate actually becomes part of the enzyme-forming system, and further that the induced enzyme is identical with the constitutive enzyme present in other strains of the organism. This work shows that genes determine not only the specificity of enzymes but also their mode of formation; apart from their significance for genetical theory the results are important in relation to the general problem of protein biosynthesis. Earlier work included a notable research on long-chain fatty acids as growth factors for bacteria. List of 43 papers attached. |
