| Citation | Distinguished for his work on electrical power transmission at high voltages. He has played an active part in the development of the 132-kV, 275-kV and 400-kV National Grid transmission systems.
In 1940 he established at Leatherhead the first laboratory of the Central Electricity Board for transmission research.
His special study of electrical insulation has led to a better understanding of the mechanism of insulation breakdown, and to improved designs of high-voltage insulators. The techniques developed and the design criteria formulated have been adopted in many countries.
He was President of Section A (Mathematics and Physics) of the B.A. in 1963; Faraday Lecturer of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1963-64 and has been appointed a Visiting Professor in the University of Strathclyde. |
