Title | Fraser, Francis Charles: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on the taxonomy, anatomy and natural history of mammalia, particularly in the Cetacea, on which group he is an international authority. His work has thrown great light on the history and polyphyletic evolution of the whales. Of special interest is his recent functional analysis of the hearing apparatus of these animals with its peculiar mechanism of sound transmission, which is nevertheless based upon the standard mammalian anatomical arrangement, though adapted to hearing under water. In particular he has shown how directional hearing and hydrostatic compensation for depth are achieved, and traced the evolution of these adaptations. |
