| Citation | Distinguished for his work on precise measurement of many quantities of physical and geophysical importance. Early in his career he made relative measurements of gravity in England and Ireland and established ties with the European and North American nets; in the course of this work he used his own and earlier measurements to provide a framework of base stations on which all subsequent surveys have been based. While at the National Physical Laboratory he has determined the density of mercury and the absolute value of the acceleration of gravity with a precision much greater than that previously achieved. This work may appear dull to some but is essential for the precise measurement of force, pressure and temperature and for the establishment of electrical units. The methods used are original and ingenious and are beautiful examples of precision measurement. He has also written several papers on the motion of artificial satellites and on their geodetic use. He is at present interested in the use of lasers to determine distances and as gauges for measuring changes of strain in the earth. As Superintendant of the Standards Division he is in charge of all work on standards at N.P.L. He has written fifty-four papers. |
