Title | Clarke, Cyril Astley: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Dr. C. A. Clarke is distinguished for contributions to medical genetics, to clinical medicine and to the genetics of the Lepidoptera. Outstanding is his investigation into the aetiology of erythroblastosis foetalis and his successful experiments on the prevention of the sensitisation of Rh-negative mothers, work for the initiation and direction of which he is uniquely responsible. His studies of the relationships between polymorphisms and disease in man have lead to the discovery of the widespread pleiotropy of the ABO and secretor genes. His work on inheritance and linkage in man is also impressive particularly with respect to carcinoma and tylosis. He has also made a special study of asthma and nutritional neuropathy. His extensive investigations into mimicry and industrial melanism have a very important bearing on the evolution of polymorphisms, of super-genes and of the co-adapted genotype, confirming by experiment the predictions of other workers. |
