Title | Blow, David Mervin: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed. Name spelt Mervin instead of Mervyn on the certificate. |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to molecular biology, especially the X-ray analysis of crystalline proteins. Blow introduced several new methods into protein crystallography including the calculation of the best and most probably electron density maps (with F. H. C. Crick), the rotation and translation functions and the single isomorphous replacement method (with M.G. Rossmann). His most important contribution is the solution of the structure of the enzyme chymotrypsin, which has led to an understanding of the substrate specificity, catalytic action, and activation mechanism of serine proteinases in stereochemical terms. These results have wide implications for enzymology. |
