Title | Dalgarno, Alexander: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to theoretical atomic and molecular physics and its application in the interpretation of atmospheric and astrophysical phenomena. He is the author of the interchange theorems of quantal perturbation theory. He has introduced procedures for the calculation of linear response functions which have been widely used in the prediction of such atomic and molecular parameters as intermolecular force coefficients and multiphoton optical susceptibilities. He has contributed substantially to the theory of atomic and molecular processes, to the theory of correlation effects in atomic structure and to the theory of continuum processes in atomic and molecular spectroscopy. His work on planetary atmospheres has led to a detailed understanding of the thermal balances of the ionosphere of the planet Earth and of the energy sources responsible for the dayglow luminosities of the Earth, Mars, Venus and Jupiter. He has contributed importantly to the interpretation of the thermal and ionisation balance of the interstellar medium. He is the author or part author of over 200 papers. |
