Citation | Distinguished for his discoveries in Biochemistry and Chemical Pathology, particularly in relation to Genetics. Dr. Lehmann has contributed most notably to the study of the abnormal haemoglobins and was the discoverer of twelve of them. He has mapped, largely as the result of his own investigations, the world distributions of haemoglobin variants and has extended his studies by important observations on the horse and in cattle. Widely used methods for the diagnosis and treatment of sickle-cell anaemia have been developed as the result of his discoveries. He has also elucidated the role of pseudocholinesterase deficiency in suxamethonium sensitivity and has demonstrated its hereditary nature. This discovery, and later amplifications of it, provided the first known examples of the genetical determination of the nature of serum enzymes. Earlier discoveries include the inhibitory action of glucose on the formation of hexosemonophosphate from glycogen, the first demonstration of an in vitro influence of adrenaline on glycogen synthesis in liver slices, and the demonstration that phosphorylation of carbohydrate occurs in human tissues. |
