| Citation | Distinguished by his part in initiating the analysis of the wheat rust problem in India, all three kinds of rust being involved, by his own research subsequently expanding it in full, especially the genetic and mycological knowledge required for breeding, and producing the N.P. Series of wheats which embody resistance to the physiological stains of the rusts together with the improved field and commercial characteristics including short straw which, allowing ample use of nitrogen fertilisers, has greatly raised yield levels. Smallness of scale in Indian farming has slowed the general use of these new wheats but widespread trials have amply proved their value. He has brought into plant breeding in India all the modern genetical and other scientific aids and has inaugurated and largely carried out breeding improvements in Sorghum, Pennisetum, Maize, Potato, Pulses, Oil Seed, Egg Plant, Okra and Luffa. In Triticum, especially, and in some of the other crops, substantial genetic study preceded the breeding. Under him the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (of which he was Director 1950-1965) strongly developed in every branch of agricultural science and in experimental husbandry, formed an outstanding post-graduate training school, established regional sub-stations, and became the most important centre for agricultural research in India. He is the acknowledged leader of agricultural science and its applications in India. His published papers deal with many aspects of agricultural science in India and include a recent authoritative Monograph of Wheat in India. |
