Title | Ringwood, Alfred Edward: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on phase transformations under high pressure in relation to the constitution of the mantle, particularly in relation to its properties at depths between 200 and 600 Km., the chemical evolution of the earth, meteorites and planets, and on trace element and general geochemistry. Ringwood's work in the field of phase transformations includes studies of olivine-spinel and their nickel and germanium analogues, cobalt and germanate pyroxenes and related compounds, pyroxene-garnet; the garnet-ilemite transformation in Ge-Si pyrope solid solutions, and high pressure transformations of alkali aluminosilicates and aluminogermanates. This work has been brilliantly applied in a series of outstanding papers on upper mantle models, and has extended to experimental investigations of the stability fields of peridotite and garnet peridotite, the gabbro eclogite transformation, the genesis of basalt magmas and the origin of the calc-alkaline igneous rocks. In the relatively short time since 1955, Ringwood has established an unrivalled reputation as an experimentalist and theoretician, and is a world authority in his field. A list of 93 publications is appended. |
