Citation | Distinguished for his pioneer stratigraphical studies of Upper Devonian rocks in the Rocky Mountains, Mackenzie District and Arctic Islands of Canada, in which he demonstrated the occurrence of reef structures important in oil accumulation. His authoritative studies of corals and rynchonelloid brachiopods showed their importance in zonation and correlation of these rocks. Joined Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, Head of Palaeontology section 1959-67, first Director of Survey's Institute of Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology, 1967 - 1973, now Director-General of Survey. Is a dynamic leader of international committees on Stratigraphy, notably of that which agreed definition of Siluro-Devonian systems boundary, and of international discussions on Non-renewable Resources. |
