Title | Stafford, Godfrey Harry: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1977 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Although Stafford had a useful career in CSIR South Africa, the present candidature stems from his work in the organisation of Science in Britain, firstly in the Cyclotron group at Harwell, then, with the formation of the National Institute for Research in Nuclear Science, his work on the Proton Linear Accelerator, and in the High Energy Physics Division of the Rutherford Laboratory. With the absorption of the Rutherford Laboratory into the Science Research Council, Stafford became Deputy Director of Rutherford in 1966 and Director in 1969. Under his Direction the laboratory has undertaken a massive diversification to respond to the expansion of 'small laboratory' physics and chemistry into using facilities of the same scale as nuclear physics. New sections including a laser laboratory, a neutron beam unit and large computer section have catered for these changes and amount to an extremely successful redevelopment of resources, with the concentration of UK high energy physics at CERN. A large part of this success has been due to Stafford's scientific judgement and his firm leadership through a difficult period of expanding science and decreasing money. |
