Citation | Professor Bradshaw is one of the world's leading authorities in the study of turbulence in shear flows, especially from the point of view of engineering, including aeronautics. His work has been on two fronts: (i) he has developed and used refined experimental techniques to study turbulence in the wind tunnel and laboratory, and (ii) he has made extensive use of the digital computer to solve equations for turbulent motion derived from the Navier-Stokes equations with closure assumptions and associated constraints. In particular, he has done experimental, theoretical and computational work of great importance on three-dimensional boundary layers, turbulent shear layers, curved mixing layers, the spreading of turbulent jets, entrainment into turbulent boundary layers and shear flows, on the effect of compression and dilatation on supersonic boundary layers and shear flows, on the effect of compression and dilatation on supersonic boundary layers, and on the evaluation of von Karman's constant in low Reynolds number flows. Professor Bradshaw uniquely combines experimental and computational expertise of a high order with a finely developed, almost intuitive understanding of turbulent flow mechanisms. |
