Citation | Barber is distinguished for his outstanding contributions to analytical chemistry and instrumentation in the fields of mass spectrometry, photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. At AEI Scientific Apparatus Ltd he made major contributions to the development of high resolution mass spectrometers as instruments for chemistry. The Barber-Elliott technique of metastable scanning allowed the experimental determination of the decomposition pathways of ions. Seminal contributions were made by him in the amino-acid sequencing of peptides, fragmentation mapping, and in computer interpretation of mass spectra. He was head of the design team for the ES100 & 200 ranges of photoelectron spectrometers. These were the first compact high resolution electrostatic analysers used for high energy (ESCA) photoelectron spectroscopy. His applications led to significant advances in the understanding of chemical shifts, satellite peak formation and spin splitting in organometallic compounds. In solid surface photoelectron spectroscopy he did pioneering work on angle resolved PES. His recent development in mass spectrometry of a novel sputter ion source (FAB) is of outstanding importance. This has opened up a new area of chemical analysis especially for large and involatile biological molecules and has pushed mass spectrometry to new limits of mass range. |
