Citation | Distinguished for work on the relationships of plants with soil leading to practical advances in the efficient production of vegetables. Studies on soil metabolism established the importance of oxygen concentrations and showed how the transport of oxygen through roots and other tissues was related to crop establishment. Greenwood has developed new concepts for solving the difficult problem of providing scientific advice on using fertilizers for the wide range of vegetable species grown on diverse soils. New designs of field experiments, new theory for the effects of nutrients on plant growth, and new analytical procedures, have provided a new basis for advice which has been widely accepted. Improvements in the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers have resulted from quantitative theories which describe the plant and soil processes governing the responses of crops. This research has improved the reliability of advisory recommendations and has been significant in lessening the waste that caused loss to the grower and pollution of the environment. Work by Greenwood and his group on fertilizer efficiency has proved its worth in Britain and will be valuable in many other countries. |
