| Citation | Distinguished for his major contributions to the chemistry of biologically active substances and for his pioneering work on medicinal chemistry. His early studies revealed structures of natural products which proved to be of great significance for biogenetic theory in the polyketide area. A further landmark from this period was his solution to the problem of Jamaican "vomiting sickness"; the agent responsible, hypoglycin, was isolated and its structure determined. More recently, fundamental contributions have been made to knowledge of the biosynthesis of antibiotics and other natural products, especially of how phenolic substances are transformed in micro-organisms. In addition to using isotopic labelling, he was one of the pioneers in this field in the application of mutants and microbial genetics. He is currently engaged in work on the rational design and synthesis of medicinal agents and with conspicuous success even at this early stage (e.g. with the anti-tumour agents and ACE inhibitor). His scope and versatility are shown by the range of his researches which encompass the structure, chemistry and synthesis of amino acids, peptides and depsipeptides, antibiotics, anthraquinones, tetracyclines and alkaloids.
