Citation | Dr. Shackleton is distinguished for his contributions to oxygen isotope palaeoclimatology and its applications to the deep-sea stratigraphical, palaeontological and palaeoclimatic record of the Cenozoic, especially the Quaternary. He first developed sensitive new methods of isotope analysis which required very small samples, resulting in the design of a new mass-spectrometer and preparation lines now widely used in this field. He subsequently made carefully designed and very extensive studies of the oxygen isotope record of Quaternary deep-sea sediments, the results of which have resulted in his formulation of a fully integrated global stratigraphical system, now accepted as a basic scale by those working on the evolution of the oceans in the Quaternary. His initiatives in these studies have thrown much light on a wide range of problems associated with the evolution of the Quaternary oceans and terrestrial events, including the history and causes of glaciation, biostratigraphy of foraminifers, radiolarians and coccoliths, the carbonate dissolution record, correlation with trade wind strengths and carbon isotope changes of the terrestrial biosphere, isotopic values of different planktonic foraminifers, and biostratigraphic units of the deep-sea sequence of the Quaternary. |
