Title | Spencer, Anthony James Merrill: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1980 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for a wide range of investigations in theoretical solid mechanics. Spencer is particularly well known for his early work on the theory of algebraic invariants, as applied to the construction of constitutive equations for solid materials, and for his extensive studies of the mechanics of fibre-reinforced solids. He has also made valuable contributions to the theories of elasticity and plasticity and to the mechanics of granular materials. Much of Spencer's research is aimed at an improved theoretical understanding of specific aspects of material behaviour. He is adept at formulating illustrative problems and devising appropriate methods of analysis, and among the areas in which this approach has proved effective are incremental deformations of highly deformable elastic solids, the inflation of elastic membranes, the mechanics of individual fibres in a composite material, and a variety of problems for continuum models of fibre-reinforced composites, including impact loading processes and the interpretation of stress singularities. |
