| Citation | Distinguished for his work on vision in primates, with special reference to the form and function of visual pathways from retina to the striate and extrastriate visual areas of cerebral cortex, and of parallel pathways going to subcortical targets. He was the first to develop accurate behavioural methods of visual field perimetry in primates, and his painstaking and ingenious experimental investigations led to an important and unexpected reformulation of the potential capacity of extra-striate pathways. He has carried out important work on developmental aspects of parallel visual pathways and their implications for recovery of behavioural function. He has also contributed to the understanding of visual acuity and stereoacuity and the nature of such disorders as cortical colour blindness and visual neglect. A characteristic of all his work is the skilled focussing onto a single problem of relevant techniques drawn from a variety of disciplines, including psychology, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, and anatomy. This had led him into a detailed study of the microcircuitry of the primary visual cortex to uncover anatomical and pharmacological features that complement the columnar arrangements demonstrated electrophysiologically. |
