Citation | Distinguished for his original contributions to dislocation theory including the interaction of dislocations with boundaries and surface films, the buckling of a dislocated plate, the effect of elastic anisotropy, and the stability and dynamics of dislocation groups. He derived by an elegant argument the conditions of instability of dislocations in anisotropic crystals, subsequently confirmed by many experiments. He pioneered he computer simulation of electron microscope images of dislocations which has become established as an important technique for the identification of defects. His highly successful collaboration with the experimental group at CSIRO Melbourne has contributed much to the high standing of that group in Metal Physics. In a different field Head proposed a new and original concept for the design of a radio telescope, which was subsequently adopted for the Arecibo instrument. He also invented a novel methods of refrigeration by selective radiation which was patented. |
