Citation | Professor Hoskins is recognized internationally for his contributions to dynamical meteorology. For several years he has led with notable success a highly productive group of theoretical workers engaged on research into a wide variety of problems concerning atmospheric motions. He has been responsible for important advances in our knowledge of the formation of frontal discontinuities, synoptic structure and evolution of baroclinic waves, dynamics of rainbands, spectral methods for numberical atmospheric modelling, planetary waves on a sphere, and the linking of theoretical ideas with practical problems in meteorlogy. He has received the L F Richardson and Buchan Prizes of the Royal Meteorological Society. |
