Title | MacRobbie, Enid Anne Campbell: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1988 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for her studies of ion transport and cellular compartmentation in plants. Using giant algal cells she took a leading part in the first determinations of the ionic compositions of cytoplasm and vacuole, and of the fluxes of major ions at the plasmalemma and tonoplast. In 1978 she began to extend her studies to higher plants, particularly stomatal guard cells. She has clarified the role of potassium in stomatal movements and provided the only detailed picture of anionic fluxes to and from guard cells. Of special importance is her work on the role of ions and other solutes in the turgor regulation of guard cells during stomatal responses to environmental factors and to plant hormones. |
