Citation | Dr. Payne is distinguished throughout the world for his innovative research on optical fibre. This has encompassed special fabrication techniques, new methods for its characterisation and new designs of special fibre for use in optical components and devices coupled and their design, construction and testing. Notable among his many contributions are, the identification of zero material dispersion in fibre, key to all today's systems (4), the world standard technique for measuring fibre preforms (8) for example, the first successful polarisation holding fibre (14), fibres for fibre lasers (20). He is a much sought after speaker at Conferences on Fibre Sensors & Devices, has played a major role in the European Optical Fibre Communication and Optical Fibre Sensor Conferences over many years and is a founding Director of York Technology to which he provides a very major technical input and a Deputy Director of the Southampton/UCL IRC on Lasers and Related Optical Technology.
