Title | Raven, Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation and personal details typed on separate sheets and pasted onto certificate. |
Citation | Dr Raven is one of the world's leading authorities on plant systematics and evolution and has published over 525 books and papers in the fields of taxonomy, population biology, biogeography, reproductive biology, ethnobotany and conservation biology. Many of these papers have been seminal and have led to new ideas and further research in all of the above fields. For example, his early studies of pollination in Onagraceae led him to propose, in 1972, that the mutualistic interactions between plants and their pollinators could be analysed in energetic terms which led to an explosive growth in pollination biology and to more rigorous and predictive models about pollinator specificity and floral rewards. He has developed the Missouri Botanical Garden into one of the world's leading centres for the study of plant diversity, and botanical fieldwork. He has used his broad scientific knowledge to become the leading champion for rainforest conservation. As senior author on best-selling textbooks in botany, general biology and environmental biology he has influenced a vast number of students. |
