Date | 14 April 2020 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Regine Kahmann as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citation giving the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Kahmann is a pioneer in host/pathogen interactions. After revealing novel features of bacteriophage Mu, she made crucial discoveries about how the basidiomycete fungus Ustilago maydis infects maize. She first solved how Ustilago specifies mating type, revealing a general mechanism, and used this to create a "solopathogenic" strain that enables facile discovery of virulence mechanisms. She defined clusters of virulence genes, and for many of them, has revealed how they suppress host defence mechanisms. Most recently, she has discovered the first fungal mechanism for delivery of virulence proteins into host cells. She serves with distinction as science-advisor to Sainsbury Lab, Norwich. |
