Date | 21 April 2021 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Glen Barber as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Dr Glen N Barber's research focuses on understanding how the innate immune system is activated in response to microbial infection and tumorigenesis. Key contributions from his laboratory include the discovery of the cellular receptor STING (stimulator of interferon genes) that he found controls a vital cytosolic DNA activated innate immune signaling pathway. The STING pathway along with the Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) and RIG-I like receptor pathway (RLR) is critical for host defense against pathogen infection (viruses and bacteria and even parasites). His work has also shown that STING signaling is essential for generating effective anti-tumor immunity. Key discoveries from his laboratory have also demonstrated that chronic STING signaling is a predominant cause of auto-inflammatory disease, such as sever systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Dr Glen N Barber's research focuses on understanding how the innate immune system is activated in response to microbial infection and tumorigenesis.
