Date | 21 April 2021 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Thirumalai Venkatesan as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | T. Venkatesan is an entrepreneur, an inventor of the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) process and a pioneer of its applications to produce thin films of complex oxides, which has transformed research on oxide films and functional heterostructures globally. Starting with high-quality films of high-temperature cuprate superconductors, Venkatesan has used PLD to make magnetoresistive manganites, ferroelectrics, dilute magnetic oxides, oxide photocatalysts, bioactive substrates and multiferroic stacks that can be integrated with silicon. He has made seminal contributions in all these areas. His company Neocera supplies PLD equipment, and scanning SQUID tools for semiconductor chip diagnostics. More recently, he has catalyzed the development of nanoscience in Singapore, where he directed the NUS Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute. |
