TitleCorrespondence concerning personnel associated with the Tristan da Cunha expeditions
Date1 December 1961 - 22 November 1965
DescriptionThis is a file of correspondence relating to expedition personnel including two military men from the Royal Signals, who accompanied the scientists to Tristan da Cunha. The file includes copies of letter sent to Heads of Department requesting authorization for expedition members to attend, as well as conveying information to the expedition personnel themselves. There is also correspondence between the Royal Society and Allan Crawford [meteorological officer] concerning the selection of two of the Tristan da Cunha islanders [who had been evacuated to the UK], and general correspondence between the Society and expedition leader, Ian Gass. In addition to correspondence the file has signed copies of the 'Regulations concerning press and publicity' that would have been sent out to all members of the expedition and travel itineraries, arranged through Ashton & Mitchell Travel Ltd.
When filing and ordering the papers at the time of their creation and use, various topics have been included under 'personnel' if they are linked to the expedition members for example later correspondence in the file relates to borrowing the 'Tristan display' and writing up results of the expedition.
