Description | Correspondence and reports relating to the possible reorganisation of the teaching of Physics at Oxford University
In 1945, two possible plans were discussed:
1) Replace the two independent laboratories (the Clarendon and the Electrical Laboratory) with one School of Physics and make the Wykeham Professorship a Chair of Theoretical Physics.
2) Retain two laboratories under two experimental professors and provide for theoretical physics by appointing a theoretical physicist to the Sedleian Chair of Natural Philosophy.
Plan 1) was carried out. The Wykeham chair became a Professorship of Theoretical Physics, held by Prof Maurice Pryce from 1946 to 1955 |
