DescriptionNuffield told Lindsay (Vice Chancellor) and Buzzard that he would give £2 million to Oxford for a Medical School - comments on Nuffield's disappointment at missing opportunity to purchase "Little Venice" as site for the college - on 27 July Nuffield agreed to give £1 million in October and £100, 000 for the basic sciences part of the Bodleian appeal - Nuffield is prepared to give further large sum at end of another year - comments on this - discusses proposal that the money should be administered by the Nuffield Trust - discusses conditions necessary for administration of the money, in particular to deal with problems arising from fact that the money is in part for the University and in part for the Radcliffe Infirmary - comments on need to find additional financial help for the basic sciences - Buzzard thinks whole scheme might be called the Nuffield Institute - comments on this - comments on need to build extra wards at the Radcliffe Infirmary and on increase in number of patients - discusses Nuffield's wish to set up school of Anaesthesia at Oxford under Macintosh - Conybeare criticisies undergraduate part of scheme (Ms note: Nuffield on whole against this too) - important to establish an undergraduate clinical centre eventually and to make this clear in the announcement of Nuffield's gift - outlines steps which need to be taken to implement the scheme. Ms note added: wonders if it might be advisable to create a Chair of Morbid Anatomy - will let Florey know if anything urgent arises.
