AdminHistoryHerbert 'Freddie' Gutfreund was born in Austria in 1921 but moved to the UK in 1938 due to instability in Europe. Studied at the University of Liverpool, followed by a Research Assistant position at Imperial College London, before moving to Cambridge university, where he was involved with the early foundation of modern molecular biology in the 1950s. Briefly worked at the National Dairying Research Institute near Reading, before moving to Bristol University and founding the Molecular Enzymology Laboratory within the Department of Biochemistry.
