Description | Copy of letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. Noted that the original was "on fly leaf of printed letter dated "Royal Society and signed by sir John Herschel as President July 1839". Noted "postmark" Washington City DC Feb. 19 ? 1840" at the end of the letter. Just received Robert Treat Paine's Dec. 1837 observations, forwarded from Cape of Good Hope. John Frederick William Herschel is now president of R.S.L. joint committee of Physics and Meteorology. Meteor shower of 10 Aug. 1839. Describes global magnetic survey conducted on Göttingen Mean Time. Hopes U.S. will join survey.
