TitleCopy letter, from Sir John Herschel to William Meadows, dated at Slough
CreatorJohn Frederick William Herschel
RecipientMeadows; William (fl. 1831) British naval officer; assistant to Thomas Henderson at the Cape observatory
Date7 August 1831
DescriptionCopy of letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. Explains to William Meadows that in the present chaotic state of scientific responsibilities [the Board of Longitude has been abolished and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich's sphere of activity has been severely restricted], the Cape observations have not been published, but John Frederick William Herschel hopes that will soon occur. John Frederick William Herschel then asks William Meadows to write when he arrives at the Cape, telling John Frederick William Herschel about the possibilities for an 'Amateur Observer' to live and observe at the Cape.
