Date | November 1873 |
Description | List of correspondents to Sir John Frederick William Herschel showing dates and extent. Pinned on the first page is a draft memorandum by Colonel Sir John Herschel recounting his effort to copy the correspondence between November 1873 and November 1874. The list is arranged in 5 columns with correspondents listed in alphabetical order by last name in the first column, initials in the second, years of the correspondence, number of letters with the total arranged to match the years, and place. A note of the date of death appears at the end, when applicable in 1874. Green pencil marks across the list denoting the request of the letters; whether replied to; letters sent, with or without application [key below the pinned memorandum]. This was one of the working notebooks used by Colonel Sir John Herschel to keep track of the copying process. Total number of correspondents seems to have been tallied in pencil at the end of the notebook: 890. Dated on cover, prepared Nov. 73. |
