TitleLetter from J [James] Inglis Cochrane, Elderslie House, Largs, to Sir John [Frederick William] Herschel
CreatorCochrane; James Inglis (d.1868?); British merchant and translator
Date3 January 1866
DescriptionHe has completed the printing of his translation of 'The Iliad' at last. He sends the last book as a specimen, but asks for its return as he has no other copy. He will be glad of any remarks on it from Herschel. He cannot be as literal as Herschel, because of the style he has adopted. He explains some of his difficulties and says that he sees no use in publishing, since the prejudice against hexameters is so strong. He thinks of presenting the copyright and 500 impressions to the Merchants' House of Glasgow, the profits to found a bursary. He asks what progress Herschel has made in his translation.
