Title | Letter from H [Henry] Holland, Brook Street, to Sir John [Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Holland; Sir Henry; first baronet (1788-1873); British physician |
Date | 16 May [1862] |
Description | He thanks Herschel for sending a copy of what he had previously read and admired in the magazine. He has gone over the whole book again and he can almost convert Holland to the English hexameter. The former translation of Schiller ['Der Spaziergang'] went some way towards this, but the Homer does so in a bolder and more heroic manner. The prefatory remarks are excellent. He notes that italics interfere with the free reading of the text and if Herschel continues, or reprints this first book, he would be justified in omitting them. Holland gives a few pencil comments [not present] and discusses these, and other matters of translation. On another topic, Holland has just published a volume of some articles from the Edinburgh and Quarterly Reviews ['Essays on scientific and other subjects...', (London, 1862)]. He would have asked Herschel to accept one, but it has gone so rapidly that a second edition is called for. He would ask that this finds a place in Herschel's library; it will include some important discoveries since the original went to press. |
